This land was previously owned by the Department of National Defence and was used as an air force bombing practise range. It was also used for tank practise. It was then owned by the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, and then ownership was transferred to Parks Canada (with management by the Parks and Recreation Department of the Town of Niagara on the Lake).
The woodlot is a composition of three forest regions: the Carolinian Forest, St. Lawrence - Great Lakes Transition Zone, and the Boreal Forest Zone. Species found in this woodlot are representative of each of the zones:
Carolinian: Sassafras, Pignut Hickory, Black Oak, Pin Oak, Swamp White Oak, Black Walnut, Sweet Cherry, Black Cherry
St. Lawrence - Great Lakes: Sugar Maple, White Elm, Basswood, Red Ash, White Oak, Butternut, Staghorn Sumac, Red Maple, Hawthorn
Boreal: Large-toothed Aspen, Eastern White Pine, Speckled Alder, Allegheny Serviceberry.
Understory and ground cover within the forest includes thick stands of Hawthorn, in addition to Alder, Choke Cherry, grape, raspberry, dogwood, dogbane, blueberry, trilliums, Jack-in-the-Pulpits and Mandrake.
