Sunset Beach (formerly Municipal Beach) - St. Catharines

General Information

Sunset Beach (formerly Municipal Beach) is located on the Southern shore of Lake Ontario in North St. Catharines. Municipal Beach is operated by the City of St. Catharines and offers residents full access to the beach, playground and picnic area. The beach provides tourists a great opportunity to experience natural environmental heritage in St. Catharines and be within close proximity to other recreational parks and trails.


On August 24, 2015 St. Catharines City Council approved a request to change the name of Municipal Beach to Sunset Beach.

Follow Ontario Street to Lakeshore Road

Follow Lakeshore Road (West)

Turn Left (North) on Arthur Street

Turn left (West) on Lombardy Avenue

Follow Lombardy Avenue to Sunset Beach  




Sunset Beach is historically important to the development of St. Catharines. The beach and adjacent land housed the pioneers who constructed the Welland Canal. 




Sunset Beach is significant to the natural environmental heritage of St. Catharines. The park area is a unique combination of land and aquatic ecosystems, connecting visitors with important ecological processes. Surface features range from sand to grass to water.

In terms of wildlife, Sunset Beach is abundant with migratory birds and fish species. The park is also habitat for small mammals, insects and reptiles.





The beach provides visitors with an abundance of recreational activities. Enjoy a walk on the beach, relax under the shade of an oak tree as you enjoy a local meal or simply go for a swim. Sunset Beach is also equipped with a free boat launch, allowing visitors to engage in boating and fishing activities. The Waterfront Trail runs through Sunset Beach.

Cycling, walking, jogging, swimming, boating, fishing, cross-country skiing, picnic.


Adjacent Land Uses

Sunset Beach is bounded on the North by Lake Ontario, on the West by Mary Malcolmson Eco-Park, on the South by Port Weller and on the East by Arthur Street.
