Oakes Garden Theatre

Left: View of the grounds at Oakes Garden Theatre. Top Righ: Main fountain attraction located at the heart of Oakes Garden Theatre. Bottom Righ: Shrub gardens located at Oakes Garden Theatre: [Krsitin Overholt].

Oakes Garden Theatre is designed around shrub gardens that have vivid green features, which are accented by many different flower arrangements and beautiful water features. Oakes Garden Theatre is the perfect place to stop and enjoy an afternoon walk in the park, relaxing on the picnic benches and taking in the beautiful scenery.

Oakes Garden Theatre has a mixture of architectural and horticultural attractions, which makes this destination intriguing and different from the other gardens of Niagara. This destination includes restaurants, gift shops, and hotels that are well known by the public and make this a popular destination within the Niagara region. There are many well-maintained gardens and lawns that bring out the beautiful flowers and colours of the gardens throughout the seasons. Oakes Garden Theatre also contains a large cobblestone wall surrounding the area to bring out the history and age of the theatre. The garden theatre is fan shaped and allows the view of the falls to be a natural backdrop to the display of flowers, lily ponds, and shrubberies.

The Oakes Garden Theatre has great significance to Niagara Falls history. The landscape of the Oakes Garden Theatre used to be the home of Niagara Fall’s most prominent 19th century hotel. This hotel is known as the Clifton House and was built in 1833. However this hotel was destroyed by a fire and is no longer standing. The Hotel created a name for the theatre and also created a large amount of revenue for Niagara Falls. Once the Clifton Hotel was no longer standing many renovations took place and the land was purchased by Harry Oakes; a resident of Niagara Falls. Once Harry Oakes had full ownership of the land he began to hire individuals such as architect Dunington-Grubb, Stensson, and William Lyon Somerville to create an intricate design of gardens and stone sculptures in 1937. The garden was officially open to the public in 1937 and in memory and in honor of Harry Oaks the garden was named Oakes Garden Theater to pay tribute to all the hard work and dedication he put into the creation of this new beautiful spot in Niagara to visit. Also, there is a stone table located in the heart of Oakes Garden to pay tribute to Harry's contribution. To this day, The Oakes Garden Theatre is one of the most famous places to visit in Niagara Falls.
