The Write Bookshop

Top: The Write Bookshop's window display of used books catches the attention of passers-by. Bottom left: Memories of nightmares: These books tell stories from war zones which tend to haunt survivors long after the war. Bottom middle: When you are tired of standing and searching for specific titles, you are welcome to have a seat and search. Bottom right: A store sign on the outside wall marks the store's location for pedestrians and drivers. Photos: Ambika Sangaran.

The Write Bookshop was opened in 2001 by the late Hannelore Headley as Hannelore's Downtown Fine Books. Now, it's owned and operated by her brother Stephen Heinemann and sister-in-law Fran Merion. The Write Bookshop sells and purchases used books. With more than 100 000 books in inventory, the two-floor store has books in many categories. The store has many smaller rooms, subdivided by book walls or bookshelves.

The Write Bookshop has been in operation since 2001. Originally, it was opened by its former owner, Hannelore Headley, as an expansion of her first store located at 71 Queen Street. The Queen Street store is known as Hannelore Headley Old & Fine Books. The current owners of The Write Bookshop are Stephen Heinemann and Fran Merion. Hannelore Healey Old & Fine Books shares a similar design and layout as The Write Bookshop.

Stephen Heinemann comes from a family of book sellers. Before being persecuted and fleeing to Shanghai, China, Heinemann's father, Heinz Heinemann, ran a book store in Berlin, Germany. While Naziism chased his family from Germany, Chinese Communism chased him and his family from Shanghai. In the short time that Heinemann's family lived in China, his father opened another bookstore there, naming it Western Art Gallery. From Shanghai, the family moved to Montreal, Canada, and they opened another bookstore there. Stephen owned and operated a bookstore in Kingston prior to moving to St.Catharines and managing Hannelore's Downtown Fine Books.

Stephen and Marion have been managing the shop since it was first opened in 2001.  When Hannelore sold the store to her brother Stephen and sister-in-law Fran in 2002, the new owners renamed it as The Write Bookshop.
