War of 1812 - Aboriginal Perspective Tour |
When the United States declared war on Great Britain on June 19, 1812, both sides sought out the assistance of their Aboriginal neighbors. While the Six Nations communities in the United States chose to remain neutral, many Aboriginal populations in Canada chose to fight alongside the British in order to prevent American expansion. Many sources claim that without Aboriginal assistance, Canada would be much different than it is today. Even still, their participation is sometimes forgotten. This self-guided tour will take you to some of the most historically significant areas in the Niagara Region while sharing the story of the unsung heroes of the War of 1812 – The Aboriginal people. Many of the battles of the Niagara Campaign, which took place between 1812 and 1814, were fought in this region. Each of the points of interest that you will be directed to holds a piece of Aboriginal history. You will learn not only about their involvement in battle, but also the attitudes and emotions that many warriors were experiencing during this time period.
