The WinterGreen Festival was established to help bring awareness about the current environmental issues we face today, and to encourage the community and visitors to take action by being green throughout the holidays.  The events are aimed at educating people about how to go green and creative ways to do it.  Many activities encourage the use of environmentally friendly lighting (LED lights) and natural decorations from the outdoors, as well as promotes the local artisans and heritage that are significant to the community.

Workshops are developed to help teach how to create green and natural Christmas decorations, and local elementary schools participate by having classes that teach children how to decorate trees in green decorations.

Many events are held outdoors to encourage people to embrace the winter season and enjoy nature's beauty.  An example activity is WinterGreen in the Park (Coronation Park in Grimsby), where families could enjoy the outdoors while participating in gingerbread decorating with free hot chocolate and hot apple cider.

The WinterGreen Festival strongly supports its local community and businesses by promoting and encouraging visitors and the community itself to shop locally and take part in the local holiday activties.  Organizations like the Grimsby Public Art Gallery and the Forks Road Pottery have held showcases and exhibits for the fall/winter season and to display decorative pottery and antiques that illustrate the holidays.  The Grimsby Christmas Market holds a special seasonal market for vendors to offer a wide selection of floral arrangements, fresh seasonal produce and other foods like smoked meats, cheese and much more!

Businesses like the Real Canadian Superstore and Cibo Osteria Cafe have supported the festival by holding cooking classes and fundraisers to help those in need during the holidays.  Even Grimsby Power gave a helping hand and donated LED lights for trees to be displayed during the festival, and would be later donated to the local Seniors' Residences and to Grimsby Affordable Housing Partnership.  The community of Grimsby takes great pride in its local businesses and artisans and works hard to show their support and concern for the environment by hosting such a unique festival.
