The Beacon and Harbourside Marina Sunsets

Left: The Jordan Harbour Shipwreck, the "Grande Hermine," at sunset, located at the Beacon Harbourside Marina, in Lake Ontario. This abandoned ship which can be seen from the highway, is a landmark recognized by many travelling through the Niagara Region, and offers great photo opportunities. Top Right: The Beacon Restaurant, and the Best Western Hotel sign in front of a pink and purple sky at sunset. The Beacon offers a harbourfront dining patio lounge overlooking the Marina and Lake Ontario, and is a great place to go for dinner, an appetizer, or a beverage while enjoying a warm summer or spring night or crisp autumn evening, while enjoying the sunset. Bottom Right: Gorgeous summer evening sunset over Lake Ontario, behind the Beacon Restaurant in Jordan.

The Beacon and Harbourside Marina is not only an area with significant heritage and historical value, but also a great area to watch the sunset and take photos. The sunset offers an amazing, colourful backdrop for "The Grande Hermine" ship half seated and half floating along the shores of the Jordan Harbour in Lake Ontario, making for amazing sunset pictures. As this area is not a public park, rather a restaurant, hotel and marina, there aren't any areas to sit and relax to watch the sunset, other than a couple rocks. However, the Beacon Restaurant Patio Lounge overlooks the lake and the marina and is a great place to enjoy a drink or a bite to eat while gazing across Lake Ontario at the shipwreck in the sunset. The restaurant offers dining experiences within a scenic atmosphere with main menu selections of steak and seafood, accompanied with some of Niagara's finest wine selections. This is an ideal place for a relaxing evening in a comfortable atmosphere enhanced with the gorgeous views of Lake Ontario and the Toronto Skyline, especially during sunset. The marina also offers pretty scenery as does the rock wall that surrounds it.

The Jordan Harbour and Beacon Harbourside Marina, are recognized primarily by the big iron ship that has been half sitting and half floating there since 1997. This ship is called "The Grande Hermine" and is an interesting piece of history home to Niagara. It is a popular roadside attraction that most people know very little about, and is a landmark people associate with being in the Niagara Region. The 140 foot ship was originally built in Quebec in 1914 and began its life as a  ferry on the St. Lawrence and later became a cargo ship, a floating restaurant, and in 1991 converted to a replica ship. The ship was brought to Niagara from Montreal by a man who wanted to turn it into a casino in Chippawa, but unfortunately his plans fell through. Ever since, the ship has remained in the Jordan Harbour but was the victim of an arson fire in January of 2003. The fire got out of control and a piece of history went up in smoke. What's left of the ship remains rusting, half sitting and half floating in the Jordan Harbour, but is still an interesting site to see.

The Jordan Harbour is recognized as an Environmentally Significant Area which is home to many species of fish as well as plants and wildlife.
